I’m going to share a few poems this week and next from my new 30 Painless Classroom Poems book, A Need to Feed: Poems of Predators and Prey. They may be a little too bloodthirsty for some of you, especially in this lovely holiday season. :>) But for the rest of you, I hope you enjoy them!
Note: Sand tiger sharks hatch inside their mother’s body and immediately start eating each other and the unhatched eggs. Eventually, just two young sharks survive, one on each side of their mother’s reproductive organs, and they are born ready to keep killing.
A Note from the Poet:
Sharks freak me out a bit. I grew up in Florida, so sharks and alligators are kind of my animal phobias. When I read about this shark behavior, I was both grossed out and fascinated. Limericks tend to be ridiculous and over the top, so I thought a limerick would be the perfect form for writing about this shocking (to me) behavior. It’s like The Hunger Games for baby sharks!

Hmmph. I guess I’m not the only one in town who writes horror limericks. 😉 Well done, Laura!

Awesome Laura — and Limericks are such fun. Plus, this was an educational post for me. Thanks!
THanks, Martha–and THANK YOU for your lovely email this morning. I really appreciated that:>)

Beautiful, and tasty! I have a student who is studying the plight of sharks (bad rep), so I’ll share with him, & wonder what he’ll think.
Thanks, Linda. I also have a great white in the collection. Lots of ocean animals in there.
