Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines are here)!
I took this picture in Ireland. I always picture sheep and cow barns as so warm and cozy, but the reality rarely supports that!
This picture makes me think of:
- Waiting in line for my turn on the slide
- Horses/mules that used to be used in mines, living underground in the dark for years
- Cows who ride roller coasters
And, here’s my first draft.
It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count:>) If you leave a poem in the comments, and if it’s 15 words or less, I’ll try to respond!

I love the ending this is wonderful
They sure do get excited about that. Just like a barn full of dogs!
P.S. I love “ears perk” and your final line, especially!
And they “moo-o-o‑o” too. Terrific image!

Poem By Jessica Bigi
Laura I love your roller costar thyme
What lovely, fun sounds to say! Totally captures a carnival feel!
Thank you
Love that you named them, Jessica, just what farmers do.
Cows
Cows meditate
on morning,
pastures,
sky,
and the glorious
chewing
of cud,
be-moosed.
—Kate Coombs
I love the idea of cows as meditating rather than being bored (which is how I think of them). And that “glorious/chewing.” Love.
“Be-moosed” is wonderful. They seem to be when one watches.
wonderful to think of them mediating and I love the first 3 lines
Laura, I can feel the warmth and smell the hay in the barn. Cute, but sad. My verse comes from observing a nearby tract of farm land reduced to a kudzu-covered silo and a few cows grazing on what is now a massive development of “copy-cat” houses. Every time I drive by the site, I envision the following:
Conundrum
Elsie and Daisy
lifelong friends
chew their cud
ruminate
ponder:
“do we raze or remodel?”
I think that’s a cow-nundrum–hehe. Love “ruminate.” So clever. And sad.
Now why didn’t I think of that? Because you’re the word guru! That would have been perfect. Alas, maybe next time.
I think that at least 10 times every Thursday–y’all come up with so much cleverness. I’m always struck by a desire to pull my poem and write a new one!
This ‘cow-talk’ has us all ‘ruminating’. Love that you managed some loneliness with just two.
love that me made them best friends
love that you
Standing here bored,
waiting to prove
that–once unshackled–
we cows can mo-o-o-ove!
Heehee, nicely done. Love “unshackled.”
I think that we all must have some kind of “cow” puns waiting, just like the cows! Love that last line.
I like hoe you stretched out the ending
I like how
Laura, I love your creativity. Turning that picture into a roller coaster ride for cows. Ha! Love it.
Here’s my effort.
Hurry, Farmer!
Get milking done!
Standing here isn’t fun.
We’d rather go grazing
outside in the sun.
They will feel much better after the milking is done!!!!
Yes! They look so bored and dark and cramped:>( I love poems of direct address like this.
They never seem hurried, yet you’ve shown that impatience well with those silent pleas.
you can almost sing this as you read it wonderful poem
Love the roller coaster ride, Laura–a bit more cheery than my contribution…
Calveless cows
with udders full,
Pastoral life?
their eyes say, Bull!
Terrific. The bulls will be thrilled to be included!
:>( So melancholy. Those first two lines–so much impact.
Future Steaks

We live another day.
Oh, dear. I kind of wish I wasn’t having roast tonight:>/ That opening line is fantastic!
Roller Coaster Cows! Now I’ll always have them in mind, Laura-“shaking and quaking”. So funny. Your picture brought back such a strong memory to me. Amazing what those pics do!

Oh, what a lovely captured memory, Linda. Love that excerpted (I assume?) line!
I Love the 3 line give the feeling of looking out into a field of cows
FAMILY PHOTO
We are posed,
though ill at ease.
Tell us when
and we’ll say “Cheese!”
Awkward Farm Photos? Hehehe…and the idea of cows saying “cheese” makes me chuckle.
OK, I had to do a lot of cutting to keep this to 15 words.
FREEZING BARN
Standing in the barn.
Ready to scream.
My udders so cold
I may give ice cream.
Joy, this is probably my favorite poem of yours. The 15 words limit served you well here–funny and tight!
Ha! Love this!

Just you wait !

This made me think of preschoolers all “leashed” up together on a walking field trip!
