Hi, and welcome! During National Poetry Month, I’m posting a magnipoem each day that I can. That’s a poem inspired by my simply looking at an object under a magnifying glass for 1 minute each day, and then jotting a poem. Feel free to try this with students (you can have them just get up close and personal to something and study it closely for a minute). If you want to share online, tag me (@LauraPSalas) or share here in the comments! You can see all my magnipoems here.
I ended up with two magnipoems on the same topic today. That’s because my 2nd draft was too long, and I realized it was also two different approaches. I like the first one much better, but I’ll share the second below my process pictures too.
My family (all except me, because I wasn’t old enough) all used to scuba dive. My oldest sister even taught scuba lessons. Scuba diving was a big part of family life for quite a few years. Because I was always just swimming nearby (or in one case, being nauseated on a boat in very choppy ocean waves), scuba diving remains a very mysterious thing to me. I recently got both my parents’ dive watches, and I wrote this looking at my mom’s.
And here are my notes/drafts…
