This Friday morning (tomorrow!), Irene Latham and Vikram Madan and I will be presenting about poetry at the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival! Virtual event all week–tix free. More info at https://www.usm.edu/childrens-book-festival/index.php
For National Poetry Month 2021, I’m posting an equation poem each day. Maybe with an image, maybe without. I needed something very accessible and doable this year! Maybe you feel the same way? I’d love for you to join me, and here are several options for sharing your own or your students’ equation poems:
- in the comments below
- on social media with #EquationPoem–and be sure to tag me, please! (@LauraPSalas on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook)
- on the Padlet on my bookpage here
Here’s today’s equation poem. Here’s a shadow kiss for you. I love thinking about how shadows are basically like cut-outs. Like reverse projections.
And if you love equation poems, check out my Snowman-Cold=Puddle: Spring Equations, published by Charlesbridge and with gorgeous art by Micha Archer.
Happy poeming!
P.S. Click here if you want to see all of this month’s equation poems!
P.P.S. If you like these, you might also love This Plus That, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jen Corace, and Mathematickles, by Betsy Franco and Steve Salerno.

Very clever! I’m glad nothing interfered with that kiss 😉
Oh this is a good one!! Love the way you got this one to work so beautifully along with the kiss!
I am signed up for tomorrow. It is 11 ‑12:30 EST I think. On my calendar.
Gentle rain + warmer temps = exploding pink blossoms
Yay, for exploding pink blossoms. Love this.
I fell in love with equation poems when I read your book, Laura. They are great to use in classrooms, too. It seems to be a very accessible, fun form, that kids (and adults) really enjoy! 🙂
Laura, I agree shadows are like cut outs. I hadn’t thought of that, but it’s clear in your romantic photo. Interference is a great word here. When I’m photographing I sometimes like how shadows change the color to a darker shade and other times… Thank you for your inspiration.
blossom + camera + buzzing moving shadow = interference
