For National Poetry Month 2021, I’m posting an equation poem each day. Maybe with an image, maybe without. I needed something very accessible and doable this year! Maybe you feel the same way? I’d love for you to join me, and here are several options for sharing your own or your students’ equation poems:
- in the comments below
- on social media with #EquationPoem–and be sure to tag me, please! (@LauraPSalas on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook)
- on the Padlet on my bookpage here
Here’s today’s equation poem. Everyone who knows me in person knows about my sacred Saturday morning donut run to Mojo Monkey Donuts in St. Paul. Yum! Here’s the haul from a recent weekend. So. Much. Deliciousness. (If you’re in the Twin Cities, check ’em out. If you’re not, just weep with jealousy ;>)
I hope your weekend is as tasty as mine!
And if you love equation poems, check out my Snowman-Cold=Puddle: Spring Equations, published by Charlesbridge and with gorgeous art by Micha Archer.
Happy poeming!

Oh your sweetness is matched only by these super special donuts!! Yum. Good that you share them, right?
This is a two part Equation Poem!!
Wonderful session yesterday. Glad there were so many attendees!
(Irene Latham + Laura Purdie Salas + Vikram Madan) = Poets and Presenters Extraordinaire
Fay B. Kaigler Poetry talk + (poets x3) = Inspiration
(This poem needs to be a Haiga equation poem with a photo of Laura Purdie Salas, Irene Latham and Vikram Madan.)
What a great workshop! I had to enjoy it part time in a class, then in my car and I switched schools, then in my other classroom eating lunch. It was worth the juggle!
I took notes quickly! You are amazing. I bet the kids would have loved it, too. Irene and Laura especially (and Vikram who is perhaps a bit newer to the process) are so good on camera and smiling. I have not done Zoom talks and only recorded a tiny bit, so I think I seem stiff and not friendly enough. They are naturals so that just adds to how inviting they are. I imagine you took notes but if you need anything let me know.
Aw, thank you, Janet :>)
OMG–I always drool over your donut pics and I don’t even really like donuts. I think I might like them Mojo Monkey style though! On a side note, I so enjoyed yesterday’s workshop and your ideas for using equation poems and riddleku with students. Great presentation!
I have the worst sweet tooth ever :>/ Thanks, Molly, for coming to the session!
Ha! This is funny! One day I want to take you to get beignets in New Orleans.
I did not get to Cafe du Monde when I was there at the ILA in 2014, my last ILA, but to a spot on Bourbon St. where there is a lovely courtyard and a band, outdoor dining etc. It is on the left as you come in from the main street and not down too far. My brain will help the name bubble up later, but those were the only I have ever had and I LOVED how delicious they were and am glad I cannot be tempted. In my new (old age) way of eating I avoid carbs (sugar) so donuts are a huge no no.….it’s my own metabolism so it is ok for others, just not me. Sigh. But that was a great memory.
Pat O’Briens is a famous place known for Hurricanes, a deadly alcoholic drink.
I’ve had them when I’ve been to NO for conferences, but I wouldn’t say no to a repeat visit with a friend :>) Funnily enough, Mojo actually sells beignets. But they’re not the same…
Your donut pics are amazing, Laura! Thanks for the great workshop!
Your poem and photo are yummy. Now, I’m hungry. I am so sorry I didn’t make it to Irene, Vikram, and your workshop. I signed up for it, practiced how to Zoom because I have never done it before, and somehow didn’t do something correct. I am so sad I didn’t make it. Do you know if there is any way to access the workshop in the future? I noticed some parts of the events were going to be available in two weeks, but it didn’t state that for your shared event.
I THINK it’s going to be available, if you registered. The email I got notified me that the session would be archived by the university, etc. I’m so sorry you weren’t able to get in :>(
Oh, I CLEARLY need to have some kind of weekly practice like that…
