For National Poetry Month 2021, I’m posting an equation poem each day. Maybe with an image, maybe without. I needed something very accessible and doable this year! Maybe you feel the same way? I’d love for you to join me, and here are several options for sharing your own or your students’ equation poems:
- in the comments below
- on social media with #EquationPoem–and be sure to tag me, please! (@LauraPSalas on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook)
- on the Padlet on my bookpage here
Here’s today’s equation poem. This one’s from a walk around the block last night. It was interesting to try to write about the lack of something. I kept wanting to use a plus sign–I don’t know why–and end with “stump” as the answer. But then I realized that OF COURSE this needed to be a subtraction poem today!
And if you love equation poems, check out my Snowman-Cold=Puddle: Spring Equations, published by Charlesbridge and with gorgeous art by Micha Archer.
Happy poeming!

Ooh, that’s a good one.
This is a great stand out poem, but also sad because of the loss of the trees. Your poem makes me think of no birds singing, no squirrels squirreling around in the trees yelling at my cats, no nests, no shade, not being able to hear, or see the leaves rustle in the wind. Yesterday, while I was gardening I first thought of a haiku and then from your inspiration I thought of an equation poem.
gardening + singing cardinal = cat eyes
As I cleaned up the dead plants leftover from last year, I enjoyed hearing and watching Mr. Cardinal. My cat watched over me, heard the cardinal, and spied the cardinal in the tree. I told Tigress, “You can look and listen, but no touching Mommy’s birds.”
Ooh, there’s a nice ending! THe “cat eyes” surprised me!
Thank you.
I like the poem but not the image it concours for me! Sobering!
Sunshine + Sunshine = Poetic meanderings
Today’s attempt at shorter. And it is gorgeous here.
Yay. Except computer is not happy. So here is one for that!
Here’s one for this experience. Ugh.
Used laptop “like new” — Microsoft Office License number for renewal = major computer woes
Oops. Maybe it was supposed to be sunshine x sunshine = spring. I forget! LOL. Hard on phone.
They both work! So sorry for your computer woes. Ugh…
I am enjoying your Equation poems for National Poetry Month, Laura.
