Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.
You guys, I am away from my office doing some exciting research. Check out my Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram feeds (I’m @LauraPSalas on all three) to see a few pictures (if I can get any through–my WiFi access will be quite spotty, I think). Anyway, I won’t be able to respond to your poems this week, but I hope you’ll share them anyway!
This image makes me think of several things:
- I just did a root touch-up on my hair, and I chose the wrong color. Oops!
- a danger flag
- a bouquet of roses
And here’s my first draft. I don’t remember quite why, but I became infatuated with the sounds of “sigh” and decided to work that sound into every line. Sometimes it’s just about playing with words and sounds!
It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

Using the #inktober word: dizzy.
Dizzy leaves a blaze
Fire upon an autumn sky
Hold the torch high
Margaret, clever word, inktober and autumn and fire partner well.
Ooh, love “dizzy leaves”!
Falls Flurry and Fury
Oohs and Aahs-
the leaves have turned!
But on the ground-
they’re spurned and burned.
Cindy, love the title and spurned and burned.
“Turned, spurned, burned” — perfect!
Chilled breezes are relevant here in the south too, Laura. Enjoy your research.
Seasons
Summer’s waning color
awakens Fall’s palette;
brilliance before Winter’s bitterness,
tolerated until Spring bursts.
“Winter’s bitterness tolerated” — exactly right!
My eye wants to see roses in this image, and I followed the muse. Happy Researching Laura–hope the ciphers in your poem don’t bring too many dreaded winter days ahead, I’m holding on to blooms…
Roses shoot like rockets
before falls last finale…

I saw a face and claws of red in the trees.
Red monster peeks
Parting the leaves
Wondering when his
Claws will freeze.

Michelle, I love image your poem brings! I have one last red rose, poised to blast off.
Donna, I had to go back and look for the monster- and he’s there!
AUTUMN JOY
by Dianne Moritz
Leaves swirl to the ground.
We rake a giant mound.
Ready? Set…in we BOUND!
My granddaughter raked a mound but had them on the concrete sidewalk. Ouch!
Your research trip sounds wonderful, Laura–hope you gather lots of inspiration!
leaves tossed and tangled
autumn’s redyelloworange
carpeting the lawn
Love “tossed and tangled”!
I’m sorry! I posted this under Dianne’s piece as a comment somehow!
