Welcome to 15 Words or Less Poems Day! Are you ready to wake up your poetry brains with our weekly exercise (guidelines here)?
Here’s a picture of a stuffed frog. It’s one of Jackie’s toys, and it’s pretty nasty. This image makes me think of:
- Barney the Dinosaur (whew, survived many years of him!) and a hair coloring job gone wrong
- the fear a dog toy must feel as those teeth come close
- what if we were as fascinated by frogs as we are by dinosaurs?
And, here’s my first draft.
It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count:>)

Awwww, this is lovely. Like an homage to The Velveteen Rabbit. I esp love that first line!
I like your idea behind this — loved toys from years ago.
Funny one, Laura. I am glad your daughter’s frog has had a chance to see and experience real dirt!
It’s a doggy toy, so not Maddie’s:) boy, has he ever!

I especially like Acrobat leapers, Jessica!
Ha, ha. This does look like it could have been a great beanbag.

That is so fun, Martha! Jack sends a woofy thank you!
Clever, Martha.
Aw. Poor Froggie. My efforts are what poor Froggie might think, if he could.

Needle, thread,
water, soap,

This is so sweet! Love soap/hope.
I think all parents who survived Barney deserve a merit badge!
Really enjoyed your poem, especially that last line.

Oh, wow. All those “F’s”. I love this.
Love the Barney humor. And the homages to Jack! As you may have noticed, I love fairy tales…

What? You think I’m
too grubby for this?

I don’t know why, but I’m hearing Danny DeVito say this in my head. Hysterical!
Perfect casting!
Such sad words,
but still she spoke:
“No lie,
no joke–
this frog

croaked.”
Ha–made me laugh out loud!
Sounds like our eulogy for poor Froggy. It’s about time for him to go…
Oh you’ve brought me back to those long afternoons of Barney–I can still hear that purple dino voice (and also remember the shattered look on my younger one’s face when her big brother learned in first grade that Barney was for babies!)
The Proposal
Green arms beseech me–
he’s bent on one knee,
to promise froggy love,
forever,
eternally.
Hehe. Yep, we still occasionally sing “Sisters ” here. My kids won’t admit how much they loved it, though. Sure did drive me crazy.
I love the froggy love!
