Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
I didn’t think I’d make Poetry Friday this week, but then…
I wrote “giraffe eyelashes” in my gratitude list one night after an episode of The Secret Life of the Zoo (I adore that show!). The next day, I received some notecards I ordered from my uber-talented niece, Amanda’s Etsy shop, and she included an extra giraffe drawing/painting! So clearly, I needed to jot a poem for a giraffe.
I actually didn’t want to make the poem all about the neck, because there are so many other things I love about giraffes. But for a quick poem, apparently the giraffe neck sucked me in like a black hole–haha!
And for lots of wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with poet, former teacher, and lovely person Mary Lee Hahn–the one who keeps us all organized on our hosting schedule!

very cute poem!
Fun poem Laura! I love giraffes and your moving, opening line especially. Your poem and your niece’s art are a perfect match, thanks!
What a lovely poem — especially that opening metaphor. I’m glad you made Poetry Friday!
Your niece is incredibly talented! What a beautiful giraffe portrait full of character. I love your poem and how the form echoes the form of the giraffe. Thanks for sharing this today!
It’s not a ‘stretch’ to say your giraffe poem is ‘fabulash’, Laura! As is your niece’s artwork. 🙂
Hahahaha!
Sweet! And, a treat to think about those eyelashes swinging like porch swings.
Love your neice’s art work, and your poem fits it perfectly. Those lashes really stand out. I can see them swaying like the back porch swing. Thanks for sharing all this talent!
Wonderful art by your niece, Laura, & your poem, awesome. Our zoo in Colorado Springs allows feeding the giraffes where we can get up close with them to admire those lashes and that long, long tongue! They would love your poem, I’m sure.
We’ve done that at our Minnesota Zoo, and it’s amazing :>)
Eye lashes that “Sway like back porch swings” sounded very fresh and though the neck gets a lot of attention on a giraffe, it did lend a wonderful shape to your poem. Thanks for sharing this! I love giraffes. They’re such funny creatures!
Giraffes are among my favorites! I can see how the neck sucked you in, but what about the knees?!? 🙂
The knees, and also their oddly stilted but graceful gait…I was sad to leave both of those out!
Fabulous fun poem, Laura. (And gorgeous artwork, too! No wonder you were inspired.) This, paired with Tabatha’s couplets, is nudging me to find some joy in writing just-for-the-fun-of-it poetry. I think I need it.
This is a delightful poem, Laura. I love the illustration so yes the neck insert works beautifully for me. I hope you and your family are feeling better this weekend.
“Your lashes swing like a backdoor swing.” I love this!
Short, sweet and lovely artwork. Headed to check out Amanda’s shop!
Such a fun poem! I’m going to send it to my mom, who loves giraffes! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
Thanks, Ruth–that’s the best feeling, when someone shares your poem!
