Immovable

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

I’m swamped with a new part-time job (royalties are down, and family expenses are up), a new contract to write four work-for-hire books, and several different presentations to work on–yikes! So, I’m sharing this silly poem about Highland cattle that I wrote after our first trip to Scotland. They are such amazing animals! (And this was way before they were trendy.)

And for lots of wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with birthday girl Bridget at Wee Words for Wee Ones! Bridget, I couldn’t comment, but here’s what I tried to say: “Happy birthday, Bridget! I turned 57 on Sunday, and I so know what you mean about all the moods. I’m glad you’ve leaned into happy! I’ll be back over the weekend to read more thoroughly–thank you for hosting! Laura Purdie Salas (having trouble commenting)”

  1. Thank you, Laura for your beautiful comment here! Happy birthday to YOU, fellow Libra! I hope you took some time to celebrate your awesomeness. <3
I apologize for Blogger’s persnickety commenting function. (shaking my tiny fist at Blogger right now)
Your Immovable poem captures these shaggy beasts perfectly. There’s actually a herd of these gals near a bike path by our home. They truly are huge.

  2. Thanks for the smile this morning, Laura! Such a fun poem to recite or read aloud with all the wonderful assonance. Happy Birthday! I’m happy to share a birthday month with you and Bridget.

  3. Happy Birthday, Laura! What a fun poem…we’ve got some cows who like to hang out in the road in Alabama too. 🙂 Thinking of you as you work to get everything done! xo

  4. Happy Birthday, Laura, I hope it was as special as you are! Your life sounds very full so best wishes for all the time needed! I love your fun poem, wishing I could see those “massive muscled/hulky cows” in person!

    1. I’m having trouble commenting on your blog–tried Google account, anon, name and url. It’s me, not you. I’m having issues on lots of blogs…Here’s what I tried to post: Happy birthday, Linda. Hooray for your beautiful trip and your birthday. This poem is gutwrenching. Life seems to have lost its value to so many. And this does feel different. When I’m bombarded with videos of murders happening and hear phone calls that young people made to loved ones as they were dying…how do children deal with this. I don’t even know how to. Poetry, hot air balloons, sunsets…their beauty is so needed. –Laura Purdie Salas

  5. Laura, Happy Birthday! When I read the title of your poem, I was not sure where you were going with it. I am delighted to read about the immovable but adorable cow. It is always great to read a fun poem that reminds me of something else. Our geese out here are immovable but they bring the whole family for a sit-down or a slow waddle across the roads.

    1. Thanks, Carol! Yes, geese stop traffic here, and I love watching the parents and goslings marching along…

  6. Happy Birthday, Laura. Sounds like you have some work ahead! What a challenge! Love the shaggy draggy cow. You have given him such a forceful personality!

  7. Laura, I love the fun, bouncy poem you shared about Highland Cows! Isn’t it fun when we have a connection to things before they get trendy?! I feel that way about Monarch Butterflies — as my work with them takes me all the way back to 2002! I wish you the best managing your time as you juggle all your projects and new work commitment! Happy belated birthday!

    1. Thanks, Carol. Yes, it IS fun being ahead of the trends :>D I’m not trendy nor fashionable in most things, but I was way ahead of the curve on the Highland cattle.

  8. Thank you for this saggy baggy poem, Laura. I love it! And happy birthday to you — it seems the season for poet friends’ birthdays.

  9. Yay! Another October bday girl — mine is Sunday. Happy Birthday to us!
I love the cow! So much fun… Did it ever make it into a collection of silly animals?

  10. Love the humor in your poem Laura ‑still 🥰smiling from reading it, and it’s picture perfect! Happy Birthday, and sending calm thoughts your way as you navigate what’s ahead–it’s amazing how much one can achieve when one is very busy–I’m there a lot, thanks!

  11. I’m so happy to hear you had a great birthday. You deserve it! Your poem is fun to read aloud, and I’m sure readers of all ages will love it!

  12. October is my favorite month so I envy that you have a birthday this month. Happy Birthday! I love your fun cow poem. We need some lighthearted poems these days. The world feels too heavy.
