Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.
Hello from NCTE! I’m in Baltimore right now spreading book and poetry love and connecting with wonderful writer and educator friends! But here’s a fun photo I took a few months ago while looking for loons at a nearby lake. There was this beautiful, long, hollowed-out log in someone’s lawn, and I couldn’t resist peeking through. What do you see? Since I’m out of town, I won’t be able to reply, but I’ll read each poem — I’ll drink it up!
This image makes me think of several things:
- one half of a superhero’s mask
- a buffalo (that rock you can see in the distance looks like a buffalo all folded up and resting to me)
- a straw…a giant straw
And here’s my first draft.
It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

Chicken in the Dark
I stare.
Who’s there?
A bump- ?
a lump- ?
Oh, a rock.
I squelch my squawk.
Wonderful lively poem, Laura. My straw is ready!

I thought Rhino, Laura. Enjoy your conference. Love the whimsical possibilities in this photo.
Becoming Obsolete
Insides a mess
nobody passes through
traditional light at the end
not a welcoming view.
