Check out the cool printable that the Poetry Friday Anthology folks created for my cinquain poem, “Fire!” As we?already know, and as sad national news is proving more than ever this week, firefighters are truly heroes who risk their lives for our safety. (This printable was created before that news broke.)
.
They have a number of other cool poem printables at their site, too. Great to post in your classroom or library. Or to model your own classroom project after.
I attended Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell’s session about Poetry and the Common Core at ALA last weekend, and it was tremendous. I wish every single teacher in the country had the opportunity to see that. Their Poetry Friday Anthology approach is simple, fun, and effective. And getting to see them demonstrate it was terrific fun. Check out their anthologies!
Keri at Keri Recommends has today’s Poetry Friday roundup — enjoy!

A poetry postcard! What fun, and an idea that could translate into a project for Poem in Your Pocket Day or National Poetry Month. Thanks, Laura!
So glad you like it, Keri. Isn’t it clever? I’ve done postcards about my books, but haven’t done a specific poem one before. I am totally stealing Pomelo Books’ idea and doing this for my next book. And maybe previous ones, too!
Thank you for this post, Laura! And, yes, Keri: Making a poetry postcard is a simple computer graphics project for 3rd-5th graders and a great way to tie into Poem in Your Pocket Day or National Poetry Month!

Hi Laura,
I love cinquains. I love how yours builds with the list at the end of the fourth line then lands on heroes.
Thanks, Liz! Cinquains are fun–great form to work with kids on, too…

This is very cool! My students will love this come Fall. Thanks for sharing this, Laura ‚and for your poem — love the way it closed with “heroes”…which is what fire fighting comes down to.
Thanks, Tara–figuring out the first and last line of a cinquain is always how I start–then I fill in the middle to connect them:>)

Yes, they really are heroes. Thanks for this.
Thanks, Ruth. So many public servants who do dangerous jobs for not enough pay or recognition…

Thanks for this poem, Laura. I have the Elementary Poetry Friday anthology. Have not bought the middle school one yet, but I want to. Love the idea of poetry postcards, I think kids would love making them too!
Thanks, Carol. I wish you could have seen Sylvia and Janet’s amazing session at ALA about the Take Five approach. And at which they announced the next PFA anthology!
