Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.
Here are some pinwheels that “grow” in a lovely garden near the Houston Convention Center.
This image makes me think of several things:
- making these from a straw, a brad, and cardstock as a kid
- very windy streets in metropolitan downtowns
- Mother’s Day
And here’s my first draft.
It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

I love this, Cindy b. A fresh change from bending in the harsh winds like a willow does!
The garden of pinwheels in Houston was fascinating. I love your getaway poem. I imagine them rising like released balloons.

Margaret, I really like how your spare verse echoes the origami of making a paper pinwheel.

You know what I really like about this, Lauren? It reflects how I feel about finding beauty and even nature everywhere. Even if it’s only metaphorical. 🙂
Beautiful picture!

Fabulous, Donna! This makes me think about the Chicken and the egg, of course, but also wind turbines and how this pinwheel shape both takes energy and creates it. Cool!
I really like the classic feel of this. The language is beautiful

What lovely colors. Pinwheels! Mine were made with construction paper, tethered with a thumbtack into an eraser on the end of a pencil. Tongue twisters came to mind first; purple pinwheels, Peter Piper, lol:
