Just a quickie post today, as I’m off to present on a picture book panel at SLJ Day of Dialog–whee! Last fall, Alan J. Wright posted a poem called, “I Fail To See These Poems in Me.” It’s very funny–you should go read it! :>)
I was playing around one day last week and wrote my own version. It’s not quite as random and whimsical as Alan’s–maybe in revision. Mine came out in rhyme, and here’s my draft:
Thanks, Alan, for the inspiration! Kids would have so much fun with this idea! And for lots of wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with watercolorist-poet Michelle Kogan!

Such a fun free-wheeling poem, love all the smile-filled spots it makes, and plunging graphic too! I might have to try this one sometime, thanks Laura!
Fun, Laura! This would be a good prompt to try. Hope your presentation goes well.
Laura, it’s an interesting peek inside the poet’s brain, isn’t it?! I am not a fan of (sweltering!) August, but I do love that line! xo
What a fun poem with catchy rhymes! This would make a great prompt for writing. I’m with you on most things, especially bungee jumping.
I’m pretty sure we all have KRUMP on shelves-lol!! Nice work, Laura. Very fun.
Thanks for the smiles this week, Laura — loved reading your fun, whimsical poem. 🙂
Such a fun poem to read and so relatable! I’m sure your presentation was a hit!
Are you really planning on bungee jumping? Love the photo illustration. “Inspiration drought” is a great opener, and I love “don’t be polite” with the instructions to stop you 🙂 xo
Absolutely NOT, Tabatha. All these topics are things I find distasteful, dreadful, or downright scary (bungee jumping would be in that third category!). :>D
So fun! I’m thinking I need to write a poem about the poems that I won’t write!!
Laura, I missed Poetry Friday this week due to a busy week of presentations, but Tabatha graciously notified me of your poetic endeavours and let me say how pleasing it is to see how you have so cleverly innovated on the form and taken the idea further. Your rhyming verse highlights just how adaptable poetry is as a writing form. You bring humour and your unique observations to share with us. You make quite definitive statements and stand strong during inspiration droughts. Good for you! Thank you for the shout out. I appreciate it very much.
Thanks for dropping by to read my poem, Alan. Yours was a great inspiration :>)
Loved this, Laura, and what a great prompt. Alan is always inspiring and so are you!
