Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
This week, I’ve talked about writing about hard topics, worrying about manuscripts turned in, and reading things twice. Since I’m in technology chaos right now, I think I’m just going to share a poetryaction I’ve shared before that seems to tie in with the themes of the week. Congratulations, Matt de la Peña, on your Newbery Medal!
You can check out my poetryactions Pinterest board here, if you like, and don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with Tara Smith at A Teaching Life today. She’s sharing a gorgeous May Sarton poem about snowfall. Stay warm and safe, my East Coast friends!

Beautiful poem inspired by this wonderful picture book.
Thanks:>) I tend to like “pretty” or funny (or both) picture books, and this one is neither. But it really touched me deeply…
Wonderful poem!
Thank you, Diana!
Such a powerful poem, Laura. In so few words. Beautiful.
I loved how the cold and scary can be so turned around when in the security love — and a beautiful role model for shining that light!
Love the image of Nana’s smile as a flashlight and her hands building love. This book is on its way to me now.
I’m sorry about the tech problems, so frustrating! I love this book, love how Nana shares the beautiful (and important) things, and that it’s about a grandmother! Your poem with that “Nana’s smile as a flashlight” is so perfect, Laura.
Your poem is the perfect review for this book. Thanks, Laura. Let’s be flashlights 🙂
You got the essence of the book — lovely.
I just ordered this book yesterday and your poem makes me even more impatient to get my hands on it!
This is a wonderful poetryaction piece for a great picture book. I love the comparison of Nana’s hands to a flashlight. At Digital Maker Playground this weekend the activity is about synthesizing the intent of Mat De La Pena’s book with a digital composition. https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/106446188203455357151. Yours is right on target.
That’s so cool seeing the different things teachers do in response to a book!
