Post-Putrid Poetry: Thank You!

April 30, 2016 By Laura

Putrid Poetic PonderingsWell, that was a rip-roaring Poetry Month! Thank you so much for reading Louis’ story. The comments meant a lot to me as I shared some work totally unlike my more usual stuff. I also enjoyed the emails you sent, sharing students’ poems that were just “too gross to share publicly.”

I admit that there were some that might even gross Louis out. Maybe.

Louis’ story is over, but he’s letting me share one more poem here–one that doesn’t even appear in the official downloadable .pdf! (Louis says Velveeta is delicious, and he knew there was no way it would disgust Miss Sweetmallow.) But he’s hoping Kraft Foods might like his Velveeta poem and turn him into a household name:>)

Have Yourself a Treat-a

For quick-melting nachos that are sure to succeed, a
good cheese that melts smoothly will certainly feed a
big crowd and there’s plenty so no need for greed. A
short time’s all you’ve got? Well that’s all that you’ll need, a
few chips and some salsa, you’re ready to eat a
big feast that awaits you when you use Velveeta™.

I would love to see some of your students’ work from Poetry Month shared publicly, though. Did you know there’s a Padlet for Putrid Poetry:

Created with Padlet

AND for Non-Putrid Poetry?

Created with Padlet

Teachers, please feel free to add your students’ poems–or let them add them in. Just remember these Padlets are public, so anyone will be able to read them!

And one of you came out of lurkdom to email me about a book with a similar premise, published in Australia, that you use with your students: Troy Thompson’s Excellent Peotry Book. I haven’t heard of this one, and I’ve ordered it–can’t wait to read it. Maybe we can get Troy and Louis together somehow.

blister poem from Putrid PoetryIf you’d like this chapter book story in a form easier to read from, please consider buying a .pdf file. There, Louis’ notes to his teacher appear on sticky notes, and it’s easier to follow the dialog and story. Here’s an example of what a page looks like in the .pdf.

Just click to read more about The Putrid Poetic Ponderings of Louis J. Pasternak, AKA Dr. Skullstench, including purchasing info.

Thanks again for joining me on this disgusting journey, where I’ve tried to offer up some poems to entice your less enthusiastic poetry readers:>) I really appreciate you guys and your devotion to sharing poetry with kids!

Happy Poetry Month!
