I’m on my way to St. Louis this morning for ILA 2015! Anybody else heading there? Would love to see you–leave a Comment here or Message me on Facebook or DM me on Twitter. Maybe we can meet up! Now… Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.) I really enjoy Nicola Davies’ nonfiction books, and Dolphin Baby! did not disappoint. I grew up in Florida, and one of my favorite childhood memories is a time that my family was at New Smyrna Beach, and we swam out (as we often did) pretty far, past the swells, out toward a sandbar. We weren’t quite there yet when something broke the water nearby. I freaked out, thinking it was a shark (my shark and alligator phobias go waaaayyyyy back), but it was a dolphin–part of a pod that swam right around us, almost close enough to touch. It was amazing! When my daughter Maddie and I were boogie-boarding at New Smyrna in May, I kept looking out for dolphins, as I always do. No luck that time. But no sharks, either, so I’ll take it! Anyhow, that memory inspired this poetryaction. Check out my Pinterest boards of poetryactions and bookalikes if you’d like to see more:>) Kimberly Moran has the Poetry Friday Roundup today. Enjoy!

I have fond memories of swimming out to sandbars too. I never dreamed of experiencing dolphins there. So happy you did. This poem was a terrific way to add your personal experience to the topic. Well done and such fun too!
Enjoy your conference time.

What a wonderful memory and poem. As Linda said, those first four words really grab you. Have a terrific time in St. Louis. I won’t be there, but hopefully will see you in Minneapolis at NCTE.

As several others have said, the first four words are terrific– really fun to read and picture! And I love the accompanying story!
