Pumpkin Palm [15 Words or Less]

Happy Thanksgiving! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who celebrate this U.S. holiday. I firmly believe it’s always time to be grateful, but it’s also nice to be reminded to give thanks. I’m thankful to all of you who visit this blog–regularly or occasionally. I’m especially thankful when I meet you in person, because it makes the connection so much deeper. It was just heartwarming to see many 15 Words or Less and Poetry Friday friends at NCTE last week. I’ll be sharing photos and such soon.

Here’s a pic from my recent trip to Florida:

Palm tree with pumpkins
Photo: Laura P. Salas

This image makes me think of several things:

  1. Sometimes the unexpected is something to celebrate–I do NOT like palm trees, generally. But this one made me smile.
  2. a donut tree–yes, please!
  3. braids with beads in them

And here’s my first draft.

It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

  1. Laura, sounds like a great place to visit! I liked your last stanza- will be my sentiments later today.

    What? No Chocolate Cake?

    Pumpkin pie
    for me to try.
    It was a hit!
    Gone- every bit.

    1. Ha! It’s always fun to discover anew dessert you like. I’m not a pumpkin not pecan pie fan, so TG treats are not always for me:) Something I rarely say! Happy Thanksgiving, Cindy!

  2. Happy Thanksgiving, Laura, and all of your 15 WOL community. First thought was how would you ever gather enough of these to equal a pumpkin patch?

    Never Thought I’d See …

    Pumpkin Oreos
    pumpkin bagles
    pumpkin creamer
    doughnuts too.

    And the winner is …
    palm tree pumpkins!!!

    1. Teehee! It is ridiculous how many pumpkin-flavored things there are, isn’t it? Your poem made me laugh:) Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Changing Traditions

    No over the river
    And through the woods
    To grandmother’s house

    Tropical Thanksgiving-
    Just as thankful

(Totally in response to the picture… home in Indiana with family for the holiday today!! Very thankful for many blessings, including the joy of writing.)

    1. Hahaha–love it! It’s fun to try on other lives through poetry. Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. poem By Jessica Bigi

    Being Thankful

    Palm roofs
    dessert blitz
    He writes wife
    Smiles missed
    Sone’ Daughter’ Wife
    Mom’s homemade treats

    1. I pictured a soldier far from home on Thanksgiving, Jessica. Not sure if that’s what I was supposed to get out of it, but it made me even more thankful–for family, democracy, and all my blessings. Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Happy Thanksgiving, all–I’m grateful for this 15 wol community!

    Harvesting Dreams

    Blueberry vine
    climbs pumpkin tree.
    Wind-waggled branches..
    pie for me!
