Dr. Louis Pasternak Skullstench: Stealth Poet
Poetry Assignment #11: The Acrostic
My Mom Doesn’t Always Embarrass Me
Mom, I would be an
Orphan without you! [So don’t take a job in some other country]
Thank you for not
Hugging me in public. Or private.
Even when you’re
Right about something, you never rub it in.
(Unlike some people I know. Dad, not that I’m naming names)
I can’t believe you didn’t faint when you read about my parents kissing! Very sneaky to make us write about our ballad topic in the opposite mood.
I’ve been teaching 16 years, Louis. It is difficult to shock me.
Also, have I suggested flowers as a possible topic for you? Tulips are certainly lovely. Just something to consider…

Oh wow Laura, does this bring back memories. My two children were 21 months apart, daughter being the oldest, son the youngest. At ages 14 & 12, baby brother went away to a summer camp, to be gone for 6‑weeks. Before leaving for the airport for his departure, his sister whispered to me that “he better not try to hug me goodbye.” He didn’t. During his weeks away he grew 4 inches in height and lost quite a few pounds and when he deplaned, the three of us did not recognize our own child/brother. While we were standing there, mouths agape, he grabbed his sister in a bear hug and she never knew what hit her. That was 43 yrs. ago and they still laugh about that.
That is the sweetest story, Martha. Thanks for sharing it. When Maddie was leaving for overseas, for some reason, I wanted to remind her of her dad and I singing and dancing in Taco Bell, to her great mortification:>)
