Rainbowfish #PoetryFriday

Welcome, and happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.) I’m so happy you’ve dropped by. Whether you’re a regular participant in the Poetry Friday world, or you ended up here from a search or a link, please know that we’re a welcoming community! Read, comment, think, share, and enjoy!

It’s Randy’s and my 37th anniversary today (as I post this on Thursday evening). I’m terrible at love poems, but I’ll say he’s the rainbow in my sometimes stormy life.

Before I share my rainbow poem, please check out my Classroom Connections post from Wednesday about Lydia Lukidis’ gorgeous new book, Up, Up, High: The Secret Poetry of Earth’s Atmosphere!

And now for my poem this week, I’m sharing my contribution to Matt Forrest Esenwine’s forthcoming poetry anthology, A Universe of Rainbows! Matt is a thoughtful, careful editor, and this poem (of the several different rainbowfish poems I sent him) went through a few revisions, even as brief as it is! I’ve gotten a quick glimpse at this anthology, but I can’t wait to read the whole book, full of amazing poetry and science!

Also, while I don’t think of myself as drawn to rainbows any more than an average person, I’ve written about them a lot! And this doesn’t include the various other rainbowfish poems I wrote. I might share a bit about that in forthcoming weeks :>)

Actually, there’s probably more than that, but that’s all I have time to dig up this week! For lots more wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with poet-educator Carol Varsalona at Beyond LiteracyLink!

  1. Happy anniversary, Laura! The language in your rainbowfish poem is gorgeous! I love rainbows so I can’t wait to read Matt’s anthology!

  2. What a sweet RAINBOW tribute to Matt’s new anthology. I like how you dug up some other rainbow poems. I’m loving that image of the rainbow doing a backbend over the world. Fun rainbowfish poem! I“m looking forward to finding it in the anthology.

  3. Happy 37 years to you and your rainbow! 🙂 I love this roundup of your rainbow‑y poems. I always feel so lucky when I glimpse one (rainbows AND your poems!). xo

  4. Happy Anniversary, Laura! Your rainbow poems are all gorgeous, but I especially love The Rainbow Fish — perfect words arranged in perfect places. And I love the ellipses after the title that makes the words just flow beautifully.

  5. Happy Anniversary, Laura, to you and your own ‘rainbow fish’! I love that you’ve written lots of rainbow poems. We here in Denver see so very few, it is a wonder when they happen! Hope you’re having a great weekend together, with both your “fins aflutter”!

  6. Hey, Laura, Love your rainbow poem and the other little ones below. Your and Matt’s rainbows bring a bit of hope today to everyone. Happy anniversary to you and your husband. Have a great weekend.

  7. Happy 37th to you and Randy! Love your rainbow poem for Matt’s collection, and how fun that you discovered you’ve created more of rainbow trail than you realized. 🙂

  8. Wishing you & Randy 37 smiles, hugs & rainbows.
Grateful to read your anthology poem & super to shoutout to Matt, The Editor
More Yay! you there among prism colors — you sent in more than one rainbow fish poem!

OK, go back to your sweet Anni. weekend, you colorful gal.

  9. I am drawn to rainbows and love your poem in Matt’s anthology. The rhythm and rhyme are just right. I especially like “double take”. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Happy Anniversary to you and Randy, Laura! Your poems remind me how small poems are like little galleries of carefully curated word choice! I love your rainbow fish poem and am interested in seeing what other rainbows are highlighted in the pages of Matt’s anthology.

  11. I love your rainbow ride! And congrats on being part of a new anthology. Happy Anniversary! We’re approaching 39! ☺️

  12. Wishing you and Randy a colorful anniversary, and congrats on your hard work! Some topics just never run out of poems, and rainbow is one of those–this book will be a hit, I’m sure.

  13. Wow! 37 years is something to cherish and be proud of. I just hit the milestone of being married longer than I was not married. We are celebrating our 30th this summer. It seems impossible! I love your rainbow fish poem. Short poems are my favorite–and they do take so much fiddling! Congrats on being in the book and I can’t wait to enjoy it along with you.

  14. I’m late to wish you happy anniversary, Laura. Hope you had a fun celebration.
Thanks for sharing all these lovely rainbow poems! I particularly like the image of a rainbow riding on the fish’s sides. 🙂

  15. Laura, Congratulations on 37 years of happiness. Your line, “He’s the rainbow in my sometimes stormy life” is wonderful so sail through the sky with your rainbow love. (Sorry this comment is late in coming. My husband is in the hospital. Life is interrupted once again.)
Your rainbows bring brightness into life.
