Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
I am gob-smacked to share that I have THREE books on the 2020 NCTE Poetry Notables list!
I am so happy! The committee is made up of teacher educators, poets, and poetry lovers, and I know they spent much time and discussion on creating this list. Check it out, and you’ll notice some other online poets and members of the Poetry Friday community–hooray for Michelle Schaub and Liz Steinglass!
I’m going to share a poem or two from one of my Notables books for three Poetry Fridays in a row, starting today. I’ll begin with Lion of the Sky (Lerner, 2019–which I shared here on the blog before), because that’s the one I learned about first (from my publisher, who was notified by the committee).
Since it’s winter, I’ll share two of the riddle-ku from the winter section. First, one for lovers of winter, like me:
I’m cold confetti
falling from a crystal sky,
blanketing the town
–Laura Purdie Salas, all rights reserved
Can you solve that one? And here’s one for those of you who are already over winter–haha!
in fur coat and cave
I exhale white clouds of breath,
dream of sun…green…spring
–Laura Purdie Salas, all rights reserved
To see Merce Lopez’ glorious art for these haiku, you’ll have to check out the book :>) And for tons more terrific poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with Sally Murphy!

Wow! What an amazing accomplishment, Laura! Soooo well deserved. The poetry in these books is transcendent and glorious!
Congratulations, Laura! I love the image of “cold confetti,” and the way “in fur coat and cave” expands the view. I’m always dreaming of spring, but I enjoy your glimpses of winter, too.
Congratulations! You are an amazing and accomplished poet. I will definitely check out these books.
I did notice you are on the list, three times! Congratulations, Laura. We had a bit of “cold confetti” this am, but the sun has cleaned it all away! Happy Winter!
Many congratulations on your well earned success. I certainly CAN guess the first haiku! We had a bunch of it this week.
Congratulations, Laura! Lion of the Sky was one of my favorites this year!
Congratulations Laura. What an achievement! I wouldn’t mind some of that cold confetti in my life at the moment.
Woo-hoo! Congratulations, Laura! This is a well-deserved honor. I adore every one of these books and have loved being able to share them with my students!
We-hell, it’s been a busy and outstandingly productive year, hasn’t it?! Did you see I have the mitten one in my post today? Congratulations, friend.
I did–thank you!
Woo Hoo! Congratulations! That’s quite an accomplishment. I love both these poems. I love the snow, but this winter has had much more rain that I am tired of.
A huge huge congrats Laura! That is wonderful!
Wonderful news Laura! We had some of that “cold confetti” overnight and today, and I think it’s going to trail on through the week. Looking forward to reading all three of your “Notable listed” books!
