First Fan Mail

March 11, 2009 By Laura

On my recent school visits, a student raised his hand and asked if I got lots of fan mail. I almost choked on my microphone. Um, no. I’ve gotten some nice emails from teachers telling me how much their kids liked a certain book or poem or something, but fan mail from kids themselves? Hardly.

So what a fun surprise to open an envelope yesterday and find a letter from a girl who was in one of my Young Authors Conference workshops back in January! She told me how much she loved my class and how it was her favorite of the day. "I am going to go to a book store and look for your books and proble buy 1 or 2. Thanck you for doing that wounderful class." She even shared her poem that she wrote as a result of the workshop and signed her name with a flourish and a heart. How cute it that?

Maybe her teacher made her write it. But I don’t care. It was so sweet and energetic. How can you not love getting a letter from a kid who says nice things and then shows her poem to you? It made my day.
