In Praise of Feedback from Kids

June 27, 2011 By Laura

A few weeks ago, I shared the Praise Poems workshop I did with 4th-8th graders  at a week’s worth of Young Authors Conferences. One of the very best things about this set of YAC is that the kids pick their favorite session (out of the 3 they attended) on an evaluation form. There are probably 20-30 sessions being led by writers, cartoonists, poets, artists, rappers, and storytellers–this is just a fabulous, varied event.

Anyway, I got a bit of my feedback from some of the evaluations of students who chose In Praise of…a Pineapple? as their favorite session.

o this was my favorite because I love poetry & the teacher made sure that you only had to share if you wanted to
o I learned how to praise and exaggerate
o I love poems and I learned that you follow what your heart says not what your mind says
o so well presented step by step; prepared students to write and be successful (teacher)
o I enjoyed this session the most
§ because I made a new friend and I was writing poetry that I’m very proud of
§ I’ve read a lot of her poems and I liked writing my own poem
§ I liked writing humorous poetry
§ I learned how to write many different poems
§ I liked praising a random object
§ this class was the most fast paced
§ it inspired me to write
§ it was fun to learn about praise poems and their meaning
§ in this session I really got to express myself and I love to express myself as often as I can
§ the energy and participation and jokingness was abroad and I like writing a short, exaggerated hilarious poem
§ because I love to write poetry!

Isn’t that fantastic? It’s one of the best things about YAC, that you get to feel like you really reached some kids. I hope every kid there was in at least one session that knocked their socks off. It’s always cool to read what the kids picked as their favorite and why. Some want craft lessons, others want reinforcement/encouragement, others want to try something totally new…and by the end of the day, I think most of them have found what they were looking for, and more.

JANUARY NEWS

I loved the holidays! And I'm so glad they're over. A quiet, snowy January is just what I need. This month, I'm working on two board book manuscripts, and I'm making materials to go with my 3 spring 2023 books.

I'm also busy prepping for upcoming author visits and setting my goals and priorities for 2023. Wishing you a lovely start to your own new year!
