Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong have done it again! This time, their Poetry Friday Anthology is focused on science, and there’s a K‑5 edition as well as individual grade-level student editions–illustrated! These books are fantastic, and I’m proud to have a number of poems in this set, and here’s one. I’m realizing as I read this that a really common theme in my nonfiction writing (including fact-based poetry) is how many different uses/roles one thing can have.
What Can You Make from Carbon?
Charcoal
Makes drawings and fire
Graphite
Makes words that inspire
Diamond
Makes drill bits and rings
Carbon
Makes all living things

And here I am reading this poem.
?Kara at Rogue Anthropologist (love that name) has the Poetry Friday Roundup today. Enjoy!

What a great poem–simple yet profound. Lovely!
Thanks, Marti! I appreciate that, esp because I tend to overexplain and get too detailed when science is involved:>)

Love this poem–and how interesting that you found the connection between this poem and other books/poems that you’ve written!
It seems so obvious now!

I’m delighted to say that Delaney Educational now carries the Poetry Anthology books. So if you’re a teacher and have a Delaney rep (there are many throughout the country) you can order through them.
Cool! I know there are some other distributors that carry it, but not the major ones that make it easy to find in bookstores. Thanks!
