Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
I wasn’t planning to post this week as I’ve been on school visits, and also because of my commenting debacle last week. Fingers crossed for this week!
But the awesome poetry workshop kids at Hassan Elementary reminded me that playing with words is the whole point. So I jotted up this first draft to share. I started reading a mystery tonight set in an Irish village, and the plot involves a fairy ring. So…
Fairy Ring
Dirty, earthy mushrooms
spin into a circle
stitched with silver thread
through the forest’s ferny floorFairy ring,
child of geometry and magic,
bringer of luck
shelterer of hidden things–Laura Purdie Salas, all rights reserved
And for lots of wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with Cheriee at Library Matters!

Enchanting poem!
Thanks, Jama!
Laura, I always like your posts. They are like sitting beside you chatting as friends do.
Both yours came through, David–thanks! Maybe it just took a minute. Congrats on this new title!
Laura, this is my second try. I might have held my mouth wrong the first time.
Can you imagine finding such a wonder? Love the “child of geometry and magic” line, Laura.
Thanks! THat construct is from the biopoem form, and I just love it, even in other kinds of poems…
I love this, Laura! The kids poetry workshop sounds wonderful.
Nothing like writing poetry with kids to give you fresh eyes:>)
Thanks for the lovely poem! I’m glad you got your commenting straightened out. Last week I tried to comment on Facebook, and somehow left my words on April’s page. Don’t ask me how I managed that feat. I was just trying to tell you what a cool post you wrote last week. 🙂 Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
Loved the photo and your poem. I especially loved the words “ferny floor.”
Thanks, Janice!
Love how you add magic with spinning, stitching silver thread through that ferny floor.
Thank you, Buffy :>)
Wonderful! Enjoy your mystery.…I happen to love child of geometry and magic.
Thanks, Linda–that’s my favorite, too ;>)
Lovely lovely poem Laura! I’ve just finished reading Ashley Spires new book, Fairy Science. It is about that connection between science and magic, just like your words here!
Magical, Laura! I especially love the imagery in the first stanza.
Fairy rings–what a delightful poem. And do share the title you are reading. It didn’t involve rings (but doctored photos), but your brief hints reminded me of The Cottingly Secret. Now there’s a fairy story,
It’s called Murder in an Irish Cottage, Kay. I’m reading it through Netgalley right now–it publishes this week, though. It’s a cozy mystery. Hmmm…I’ll have to check on The Cottingly Secret.
Laura, I’m so happy you decided to fit in this draft. I love fairies and your poem is enchanting:
“stitched with silver thread
through the forest’s ferny floor”
“shelterer of hidden things”
Many thanks from the fairies and me!
