This Merry-Go-Round [by Laura Purdie Salas]

Happy Poetry Friday! In person today, I’m sharing poetry and picture books with students at two Sheboygan, WI-area schools–fun! Tomorrow, I’ll be presenting at the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival. If you are going, I hope you’ll find me and say hi!

I’m sharing a riddle-ku today:

This merry-go-round
spins upside down: I’m singing
the room full of breeze

Clue #1
Clue #1

Clue #2
Clue #2

Answer: Ceiling Fan

A Note from the Poet:

Most haiku don’t have a sing-song rhythm (da-DUM, da-DUM, etc.). But since a ceiling fan has a steady beat, I had fun trying to make this haiku have a beat, a rhythm.

That’s from my just-out book (Kindle and paperback) Riddle-ku: Haiku for Very Close Reading.

    1. Hmmm…I don’t remember using this poem for 15 Words or Less, since I wrote it just for Poetry Month. But my memory stinks, so it’s possible!

  3. “I’m singing the room full of breeze” I love this line and a half! Very neat!
BTW I’ve used lines from the 15 words challenge in Hidden, to create a “found poem” today! I just couldn’t resist it. There were some awesome lines yesterday and it got me to thinking… sometimes that’s not a good thing! But this time I don’t think it was so bad.

    1. Ooh, I’ll have to check it out–thanks, Donna! Centos can be lovely! And I think other poets would be honored to have their words beget a new poem.

    1. Thanks! One (beautiful) day down, one more to go, then a drive home brainstorming poems and picture books:>)

  5. Love that last line! Very clever. Hope all your presentations went well!

    1. Thank you, Andi–the ones today were lovely (though still draining for an introvert!). Two more tomorrow, which should be fun as well.

  7. I think students will have tons of fun with the riddle-ku form. A nice haiku spin off!
