Welcome, and happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.) I’m so happy you’ve dropped by. Whether you’re a regular participant in the Poetry Friday world, or you ended up here from a search or a link, please know that we’re a welcoming community! Read, comment, think, share, and enjoy!
As I prepare for my fall picture book publication (up for pre-order now!), I’ve been thinking about helpers and adaptations a lot. I went looking for poems I’ve already written on this topic. I don’t have tons, but I did find a few, and I’ll scatter them over the coming months.
This week, I’m sharing two poems about monoskiing (or mono skiing or mono-skiing). I wrote these years and years ago as I composed some poems to submit to And the Crowd Goes Wild! A Global Gathering of Sports Poems. That fun anthology was edited by Carol-Ann Hoyte and Heidi Bee Roemer and is still available on Amazon. It’s one of the earliest anthologies I was in :>D
I wrote poems about a few different sports, including a couple that are featured in the Paralympics. One was monoskiing or sit-skiing. Michelle Schaub actually wrote the monoskiing poem that ended up in this anthology, and it’s wonderful! Make sure to check it out if you buy the book. And you’ll notice other names from the kidlit poetry world in there, too, though only a couple from the current Poetry Friday community :>) My poem in this anthology is about a different sport–stay tuned.
Here are the two monoskiing poems I wrote. It was fun to revisit these!

And for lots of terrific poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with poet Cathy Stenquist!

Laura, your new book sounds fascinating! I’m looking forward to it. I love the phrase “sheet of mountain” and the lines “Man of muscle, steel and chrome” and “I make the snow and sky my home.”
I love how your imagination helped my imagination swoop down a mountain, “carving snow ribbons.”
Laura, I always come away with awe for the world & so much new info with your posts. I love the idea of a snow ribbon from this amazing sport. Great glory gal, for your new one forthcoming. Hugs from your fan, JAN [ps. The anthology team reminds me of the tasty anthology DEAR ToMATO, which if memory serves, Carol-Ann Hoyte also organized & edited.
I’d never heard of mono-skiing — your poems vividly capture the sport. “carving snow ribbons,/slicing silent sheet of mountain” is especially wonderful. And congrats on the new book!
I like slicing silent sheet of mountain, such a visual beauty. Congratulations on your new release!
Congratulations on the new book. What a clever topic and such an inviting way to talk about overcoming disability. I am in awe of the Paralympians and other athletes with disabilities and how they overcome their challenges to do marvelous and incredible things. Kids and parents alike will love this book.
“Carving snow ribbons” is lovely! I’m excited for your new book, Laura! Hooray! xo
oooooh, I love ‘make snow and sky my home.’ That’s lovely. Another book?! Hooray! Congratulations. I need to let my public library know and ask that they order it.
Whoosh! I can feel the strength and energy in “slicing silent sheet of mountain”!
Congrats on the upcoming book, which looks *wonderful*!
What a fun looking new book, Many Congrats Laura! You captured an image with your “Carving snow ribbons,” so visual, thanks Laura!
Oh, I am SO excited for this book! My son uses an iPad in class as an accommodation, and we love talking about how people use lots of different tools to help them live their best lives. 🙂
