Poem-a-Day: #15

atop your shoulders,
taller than I hoped to be,
I see other worlds

Cue sappy poem music. But BookSpeak! won the Minnesota Book Award (Children’s Literature category) last night, and I’m in a floaty/sappy mood today! And in that banquet hall full of writers and readers and booksellers and librarians and book-lovers of all kinds, I was so aware that even though writing itself might be solitary (usually), the community of book-lovers is always part of my process. I felt like I was riding on everyone’s shoulders last night, and I knew I could only write the things I love because of the book tribe (both locally and online) that I’m part of. (Fade sappy music–but it’s true!)

  1. WOW! I am thrilled for you, and sappy music is just right for the occasion! So you got to use your notecards, eh? We’ll be waiting for another haiku about the cards that DON’T end up as confetti…

    A million congrats!

    1. I did! I was clutching that index card like my life depended on it. I was going to be quoting two stanzas from This Is the Book, and I knew I’d bungle them if I didn’t have them written down. And the three sets of people I wanted to give special thank yous to! Thanks, Renee!

  3. Congratulations, Laura. I am thrilled for you! And I love today’s haiku. So many possible images from so few words.

    1. Thanks, ellie! I’m finding with these haiku that if I write them while I’m really emotional (good or bad), I tend to go all abstract. I really need to be more specific, more visual, since that’s what’s at the heart of haiku…but this one I liked even if it was very open to interpretation:>)
