Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.
When I was at the Minnesota Children’s Book Festival back in…September? October?–anyway, when I was there, I loved this cool umbrella chandelier inside the Anderson Center. This image makes me think of several things:
- How hard it is to balance things
- What if instead of blocking things, we welcomed them in?
- Wouldn’t it be weird to use an umbrella as a lifeboat?
And here’s my first draft. I wanted to kind of zoom in from the epicness of the storm to one tiny thing.
It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)
Please note: I’m at NCTE–whee! But that means I won’t be able to comment on poems this week. Hope you still have fun writing them!

What an interesting picture with the opposite suggestions of water and fire. Your happy bluebirds made me smile, Laura.
