Last month, I went to the University of Nevada Las Vegas to speak at the Gayle A. Zeiter Children’s Literature Conference. It was a fantastic experience, and I wanted to share a few pictures.
- Me with Cyndi Georgis, Ph.D. Cyndi is the Associate Dean of Teaching & Learning at UNLV, and to hear the admiration (some might even say hero worship) she inspires in both her students and her colleagues was really inspiring.
- Man, I swear I typed notes on my phone with everybody’s names. But they aren’t there. The gentleman on the right was our tech guy extraordinaire, who kept everything rolling along smoothly. And on the left is a conference helper who was constantly answering questions, helping people find stuff, etc. ALL of the conference helpers were so great!
- Kelly Goodall and me
- It was an honor to present alongside Deborah Hopkinson (I love Annie and Helen) and Jenni Holm (and May Amelia and Turtle are girls after my own heart).
- Signing books at the conference
I had a wonderful time presenting about children’s poetry and sharing easy ways to dive into interactive poetry reading and writing poetry. And, of course, sharing a selection of some of my favorite recent poetry books to an audience of pre-service teachers, teacher educators, classroom teachers, librarians, children’s writers, and children’s literature enthusiasts.?The whole day was just awesome.
On top of that, Randy and I spent a few extra days in Vegas and had a super time. In fact, here’s what my morning pages say about the entire trip: “Highlights: Gordon Ramsay pub with mini pot pies and sticky toffee pudding and newsprint dresses. Eiffel Tower lunch with l’reve de l?orange creamy orange drink, cheese tray, etc. Eiffel Tower at night. High Roller ferris wheel. Sprinkles cinnamon cupcake. Pink Taco dinner once at Hyatt. Paris Hotel. Rock of Ages?crazy guy in front of us. Family there with kids?ack! Table 10?no way, Jose. Atomic testing museum?cool! Fountains at Aria and at Bellagio. Conservatory’didn’t care for the spring display that much. Cool butterflies, though. Randy went to L?Reve Friday night while I went to Table 34 with Cyndi, Jenni Holm, Deborah Hopkinson, Amanda Melilli, Rebekah Piper, Marie LeJeune. Lovely dinner (mac and cheese) and great conversation, though I felt dumb. Saturday, Ran did the pinball museum while I did the conference. Wonderful conference!”
Lots of happy smiles in those photos! True book lovers indeed.

It all sounds great! But what I want to know more about is that sticky toffee pudding!
Ooh, it’s that wonderful Scottish dessert–date (but you can’t tell that) cake with warm toffee sauce. Omg.

Thanks–it was delish. I just had Mac and cheese tonight in New Orleans, too:)
