Mushroom [15 Words or Less Poems]

Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.

I was walking Jack the other day and came across this one small mushroom in a huge open field that’s part of a park near my house. With this filter on it, it practically looks like a cardboard cutout. So smooth. So simple. This image makes me think of several things:

  1. The gumdrops in Mom and Dad’s gumdrop jar–the white ones are OK, though I prefer the citrus and the black licorice ones
  2. A cloche (1920s style hat) I wore to a mystery dinner one time. Um, I pretty much looked like a gumdrop in that hat. Not a good look on me.
  3. H.R. Pufnstuf

And here’s my first draft. (Do you ever talk to your clothes or other inanimate objects? I do.)

It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count)

  1. Laura, I see no picture and no first draft from you. Is the problem at my end or yours?

    1. Yeah, tech issues, and I can’t get in to fix them :>( Hopefully it will be fixed later today…

  2. Laura I love that you saw a cap in the pic

    poem By Jessica Bigi

    so carefully
    mothers earth
    sows paroral
    buttons on her
    grass nit swatter
    she call them
    truffles

    1. Love this extended metaphor, Jessica. The pearl buttons, the sweater knit out of grass. Wonderful!

  4. What a stark contrast Laura. The muted look of the top of the mushroom reminds me of my Swiffer duster after it ingests bird dander and dog hair.

    Ms. Swiffer

    You appear
    in pretty pastels
    I swipe
    your life
    now dust to dust.

  5. I really like today’s picture. My poem makes no sense without it.

    A Friendly Fungi

    Come by my dome -
    I’ll make room
    in my small home
    where friendships bloom.

  6. Yay, you got it fixed!

    A FUNGUS AMONG US

    One of a kind
    in a field of green-
    Regal, Elegant,
    Proud to be seen.

  7. Calm your mind
    Breathe
    You will find
    Joy
    in your heart
    Peace
    Within your soul

    Anne McKenna

(Not sure if this fits but I wrote it anyway)

  8. Stopping back tonight to see if the image is up! Cute as a button!

    Froglight

    In the field
    By the road
    A toadstool glowed
    Reading light
    For Frog and Toad.
